Make it your move

Whether it’s across town or across the country, moving is a universally stressful time. While many hire professional movers to make things easier, their rates can be expensive, and putting valuables in the hands of strangers can result in damage. However, there is a way to take on the task yourself while maintaining organization and sanity. Carla Saavedra, owner of Clearly Organized Inc., offers some expert tips for a smooth move.

“Stressed about moving? The first step in ensuring an organized move is to create a calendar,” said Saavedra. “Start with the move date and work backwards. This will give you a realistic timeline.”

Next, purge all household items that have not been used in a while, are broken or unwanted. Instead of throwing them out, donate them to a local charity.

“Start right away,” said Saavedra.  “Don’t wait until the week before the move to box your belongings. Box and label seasonal items, seldom-used kitchen appliances and books. Store them in one area of your home.”

It’s important to work on one area at a time until completion. Disorganization is what happens when focus is lost and too many areas are attempted at once.

When labeling, be sure to clearly mark all four sides of each box with a black marker. Saavedra advises using colored dots to indicate the appropriate room of the contents.

“Create a box containing sheets, towels and necessary items that you need for the first night in your new home,” said Saavedra. “Pretend you are going away for the weekend. Pack enough clothes, toiletries, etc. for two days.”
