Creating a place to escape

A bedroom should be a peaceful haven, a place to unwind, relax, de-stress and get cozy at the end of the day.

Creating a more relaxing bedroom can be a fun and inexpensive proposition, said interior designer Debbie Perez, owner of Tweak Your Space in Tampa.

She said to start with window treatments. “When you add one item, like drapes, it makes a bedroom cozy. Draperies make a big difference,” Perez said. “It’s a sound-deadening component. It makes it quiet. It darkens (the room) at night so things can be cozy. Then you can open them during the day and bring in sunshine.”

Colors also make a big difference in creating a calming effect. Perez recommends blues and greens, which create a more relaxing bedroom environment, and avoiding colors like red and yellow in the bedroom. Red stimulates the appetite and is very energizing, as is yellow, she said.

Adding an area rug in a non-carpeted room is also an option because it “grounds the space” she said.

Adding textures also helps to sound-deaden a hard space and to create a more cozy bedroom. Finally, Perez said it’s important to remove clutter and organize a bedroom.“When everything is in its place it allows one to move freely around the room. Doors and drawers should freely open. Things should not be on top of one another.”

Another option is to create a mini-spa in the bedroom by stocking a drawer with nail maintenance items, lotions, a warming eye mask and scented candles.
